Design in Sports
One of my favorite things to do as a designer is to make a logo. I like the concept of telling the story of a company, or business in a simple graphic.
Growing up in Brooklyn and being a huge sports fan, I remember talking sports with my cousins one day, and one of them pointed out to me that the Milwaukee Brewers logo was more than just a glove. When he broke it down, and said that it was really an “M” and “B”, I was amazed and hooked. It blew my mind that this simple image told the whole story of its franchise in a subtle but genius way.
I started looking for other sports logos that had a cool story behind it. Like the old Montreal Expos “M” logo, really stood for “Expos de Montréal Baseball”. And the New Jersey devil logo was an “NJ”. Ever wonder why the Minnesota Twins use a TC logo on their caps? Or what the hec was with that Quebec Nordiques logo?
Now that I look back, I realize that this was the beginning of the rest of my life. I had no idea that the simple things we see around us can have such a powerful impact in our lives. 
Nowadays, sports franchises want to look mean, big and tough with their logos. They are in your face representations that basically tell us: what you see is what you get. No stories, no double meanings, no thought put into it. But I guess it’s what happens in this instant world where emails replace written letters, and you keep in touch with family through MySpace.
Oh, in case you were wondering about the Twins and Nordeques: the TC is for Twin Cities (Minneapolis and St. Paul) and Nordeques is french for northerners and that logo is really a stylized igloo and hockey stick making an “N”. Cool huh?
